Frequently Asked Questions

Q: 1. How can I contact the UNC Nephropathology Laboratory?

A: Tel   (919) 966-2421
    Fax  (919) 966-4542

Office hours:  Weekdays (except major holidays) 8am-5pm Eastern Time

Q: 2. Can I discuss findings with a pathologist?

A: Yes. You can contact the nephropathologist on service at our main office number, (919) 966-2421. We are always available and encourage you to contact us so that we may discuss the clinical and pathological findings of your cases. Additionally, clinical consultations and referrals are available with members of the Division of Nephrology and Hypertension and The Kidney Center at UNC.

Q: What material can I send to get a diagnostic evaluation?

A:  Renal biopsies for Light microscopy, Immunofluorescence microscopy, and Electron microscopy, preferably mailed in the UNC prepared kits (see below). We also render second opinions on outside histologic material (glass slides, EM, etc.). We generally do not provide partial evaluations (such as IF or EM only interpretations). Please contact us if there are any questions regarding the suitability of a tissue specimen.

Q: 4. What are biopsy kits and how do I order them?
A: Our pre-assembled, ready-to-use biopsy kits contain 3 vials: #1 a bottle containing 10% buffered formalin; #2 a bottle with Michel’s transport medium; #3 a bottle with glutaraldehyde.  The tissue fixed in formalin (Bottle #1) will be used for standard light microscopic examination; tissue submitted in bottle #2 (Michel’s transport medium) is used for immunofluorescence studies, and tissue sent in bottle #3 (glutaraldehyde) will be examined by electron microscopy.  (Please also see the “biopsy memorandum” containing more detailed information).

You can obtain biopsy kits free of charge by calling our office. We will send you, via regular mail, a package of our pre-assembled biopsy kits for free. Upon receipt, kits must be stored in a refrigerator or cold room until used. Stored correctly, the kits have a shelf life of several months noted on the outside of the box. Kits are mailed in groups of 3 or 6, bundled with our memo and material safety data sheets.

Q: I am a patient and would like to obtain a copy of my renal biopsy report?
A: If you are a patient and would like to obtain a copy of your report, you should contact your physician who requested our services.  Please call us if you have any questions.
