The UNC Nephropathology Laboratory was established in 1978 under the leadership of J. Charles Jennette, MD, Brinkhous Distinguished Professor and Chair of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine. The laboratory has grown to be one of the leading centers that provides expert diagnostic evaluation of native and transplant kidney biopsy specimens obtained in the United States or abroad. Our archives of over 20,000 cases facilitate clinico-pathologic correlations and in-depth analyses. Three specialty trained and renowned nephropathologists, i.e. J.C. Jennette, V. Nickeleit and H.K. Singh, are the medical faculty of the laboratory that evaluates approximately 1800 renal biopsy specimens annually.
The teaching activities include the training of one to two nephropathology fellows per year. At UNC, the nephropathology faculty is involved in teaching medical students, residents and fellows. We are also heavily engaged in formal teaching of nephropathology (both native kidney and transplant diseases) at national and international meetings, such as the United States and Canadian Academy of Pathology (USCAP) annual meeting, the American Society of Nephrology (ASN) annual meeting, the annual Columbia postgraduate review course on nephropathology and the Nephropathologiekurs Volhard-Fahr in Mannheim, Germany.
Ongoing scholarly research activities in the areas of native kidney diseases and transplantation are conducted by the nephropathology faculty in collaboration with faculty members in the divisions of Nephology and Hypertension and Transplantation Surgery.
